Skoulofia is a small, picturesque village in the Municipality of Rethymno (Municipal Unit of Arkadi) in Crete. It is situated approximately 18–20 km south-east of the town of Rethymno, at an altitude of around 220 metres, in a lush green area with streams and olive groves. It has a population of around 120–130 and is ideal as a peaceful base for exploring the area.

Location and character
The village is referred to as Spilufia in Venetian sources. It has historical ties to the region and was once a centre of the revolution. It features tavernas and cafés alongside the densely vegetated stream bed, as well as essential amenities (supermarkets, etc.). It is peaceful and traditional, ideal for relaxing away from mass tourism.

Restored olive oil mill: It demonstrates the traditional olive oil production process – one of the main attractions.

Churches:
The central double-aisled c...hurch of the Transfiguration of the Saviour and Saint Demetrius.
Church of St John Chrysostom (featuring a pediment slab/sarcophagus dating from 1531 and an interesting view from the window).
Ruined church of the Virgin Mary (near the old school, dating from 1410, with a carved window).
Others: Agia Paraskevi, the cemetery church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, chapels (Dormition of the Virgin Mary, Agios Fanourios, etc.), ruins of the church of the Archangel Michael.
Manolakakis building complex (listed monument), Ottoman fountain with Arabic inscription, traditional architectural features.

Distances from beaches
The nearest beaches are on the north coast (Rethymno Bay area):
Skaleta / Stavromenos / Sfakaki beaches (sandy, with facilities in places): approximately 5.5–8 km (10–15 minutes by car). Skaleta is a continuation of the long beach at Rethymno.
Spilies Beach (or ‘Maliou’s Stream’): ~6.9 km.
Geropotamos Beach: ~7.3 km.
Further afield: Bali (~15 km east), Plakias / Damnoni / Preveli beaches (south, 25–40+ km).

Nearby well-known villages and attractions
Ancient Eleftherna (archaeological site + Museum): approximately 3–4 km – one of the most important archaeological parks in the prefecture of Rethymno.
Arkadi Monastery: approximately 6–8 km – a historic monastery of great significance in the Cretan Revolution (many residents of Skouloufia took part in the uprising).
Margarites: a traditional pottery village (a few kilometres east/southeast), with pottery workshops and Byzantine churches.
Amnatos, Pikris, Roupes, Erfoi and other small villages in the Arkadi area.
Melidoni Cave: a little further away (towards Perama).
Arkadi Gorge, the Hellenistic bridge at Eleftherna, etc.

The village is an excellent base for day trips to Rethymno (a town with a Venetian old town and beach), the inland areas (olive groves, gorges) and the northern beaches. The distances are short by car; there is also a limited bus service (KTEL).Read more
